URFEUER®

The kitchen fireplace for indoors and outdoors

Grilling, braising, roasting and cooking like back then

Whoever likes to barbecue knows: nothing tastes better and juicier than a meat skewer prepared on the grate, because the wood fire of a kitchen fireplace lends an unmistakable aroma and kitchen stoves spread atmosphere and cosiness. The individual variant for cooking as in the past is the URFEUER® kitchen fireplace. It allows you to prepare food with a wood fire. The spit axis is optimally positioned in relation to the fire, so that the roast is always guaranteed to succeed. The barbecue smells are dissipated via the chimney; the extractor hood is already integrated. The open kitchen fireplace is perfectly installed at working height with a storage surface in front. In this way, the primal fire also lends modern kitchens cosiness and flair.

Combining campfire feeling with cooking fun

BRUNNER URFEUER® fireplaces spread a campfire feeling all year round, not only outside, but also in your own four kitchen walls. Where people like to get together, with family or friends, because the kitchen room has always been the most sociable room in a house. People sit around the large dining table, talk and spend time together - and cook together on the kitchen fireplace and kitchen stove. Roasts can be gently grilled over the fire for hours on the meat spit for a unique treat, just as fish or vegetables can be prepared on the surface grill. The flickering and sparkling dance of the open flames on the back wall of the fireplace, the quiet crackling and the scent of blazing wood fire create an additional cosy ambience and heat up the room comfortably.

Visually and technically appealing

The BRUNNER kitchen fireplace can be taken into account when planning a new kitchen. It is framed at working height of the kitchen unit. with a storage surface in front. In this way, the URFEUER® also lends comfort and flair to modern kitchens. The grill spit has a robust gear motor that operates at a speed of two revolutions per minute. It is optimally positioned in relation to the firebox rear wall of the open kitchen fireplace. Roasts, drumsticks or roast beef cook slowly. And are guaranteed to succeed. The grill smells are dissipated via the chimney; the extractor hood is already integrated. As an alternative to the spit grill, the embers in the firebox floor can also be spread out and used to sizzle juicy steaks, delicate scampi or refined meat and vegetable skewers, for example. There are no limits to food preparation.

Kitchen stoves are popular

For those who not only want to grill over an open wood fire in the kitchen, but also cook, bake and heat with wood, the kitchen stove and oven are the right thing. The traditional stoves from grandmother's times bring a touch of nostalgia into the kitchen and anyone who has ever cooked with them swears by them. Whether apple strudel, boiled beef soup or roast pork, the taste experience that a wood fire gives is unique.

In a kitchen oven, the baking and cooking temperature is controlled by adding wood to the combustion chamber. This requires a little routine so that the hotplate does not get hotter than desired. It is advisable to add several small logs to the fire chamber more often than too large logs. Finding out where the best heat zones are for cooking and baking dishes also takes practice. For example, the plate above the firebox provides direct, fast and high heat for cooking, while the plates at a distance from the firebox are ideal for keeping already cooked food warm or letting it draw.

Open fireplace

It's about atmosphere and the feeling of it

URFEUER® fireplaces are not only available as kitchen fireplaces, but in various models, they stand against the wall, free-standing in the room - or even in the kitchen. They are open fireplaces without separating viewing glass and spread not only mild warmth in the living room, but also the smell and the acoustics of the fire. An Urfeuer® fireplace satisfies the human longing for protection and security; you sit in front of the flames, relax, dream. The focus is on the atmosphere and the calming feeling emanating from the fire, especially in hectic times. This is why BRUNNER's open fireplaces are also called URFEUER® fireplaces, because they were man's first real source of heat in prehistoric times. The heat output of an URFEUER® fireplace is rather secondary, it is only 20 to 30 percent. You might think that an open fireplace without a viewing glass gives off more heat to the living space than one with a viewing glass, but the exact opposite is the case.

How to make a leg of lamb with the Urfeuer® kitchen fireplace

A deliciously Mediterranean and yet simple dish to prepare in the URFEUER® fireplace is leg of lamb. You need a piece of meat weighing about 1.5 to 2 kilograms, coarse-grained salt and pepper from the mill, 5 cloves of garlic, 5 tablespoons of olive oil, 4 sprigs of rosemary and 4 sprigs of thyme. First, go under the skin of the leg of lamb with a larding knife to work in the garlic and the sprigs of spices. Then rub the meat with olive oil, salt and pepper and let it rest for eight to 10 hours. Then place the leg of lamb on the spit grill, stack logs in the fireplace close to the back wall and light it. After about 30 minutes, the spit with the leg of lamb can be hooked into the receptacle and the grill motor started. A drip tray should be placed underneath to catch any escaping liquid. Then cook the meat for about three hours in front of the wood fire on the back of the fireplace. Meanwhile, the fire is kept burning with two to three logs

Tiled fireplace and tiled stove: an enrichment for every kitchen

While a wood stove with baking compartment, hotplate and grill grate is suitable both for preparing food and for heating with the environment-friendly, CO2-neutral and inexpensive energy source wood, a "normal" wood stove is there for heating. It enriches every kitchen with its cosy warmth and the wonderfully cosy atmosphere it spreads. In open-plan living areas, it can act as a room divider visible from all sides or, in the swivelling version, it can provide warmth and firelight when cooking, dining and sitting together on the sofa. Fireplaces are beautiful without a tile cladding or with natural stones. However, tiled fireplaces usually have a higher heat storage capacity. Of course, you can also paint a tiled stove with heat-resistant paint. For this, the surface must be free of grease, dust, silicone and soot and the tiled stove must be cold.

Security need not be visible

Because open fireplaces draw a lot of the available air from the room where they are installed, about 300 to 400 cubic metres per hour, they need a well thought-out design. In older buildings, this is usually not a problem because fresh air can flow in through leaks such as cracks and gaps in windows and doors. The situation is different in dense construction or well-insulated houses: There is less and less air in the room, a negative pressure is generated and flue gases can enter the living space. BRUNNER has developed the following technology to prevent precisely this: The URFEUER® fireplaces regulate the pressure balance via a supply and exhaust air system with an outside air connection. This means that the fire is always supplied with sufficient air. The air is directed to the fireplace without any draught phenomena. For maximum safety, which BRUNNER has developed and patented over many years.

Safety is also the key to spark protection. All URFEUER® fireplaces are equipped with this feature. Because as tempting as an open fireplace is, sparking softwood or pieces of embers can of course fall out if you are not careful. You would not be allowed to take your eyes off the fire while it is burning and stay in the room the whole time. Due to its complexity, there is a grille made of black lacquered stainless steel mesh that is simply lowered upwards by means of a smooth-running guide. It is not visible, neither when it is lowered - because it is guided in a narrow gap between the fire protection panels - nor when it is pulled down. It is not possible for the eye to perceive the fire screen during the entire burning process. For full enjoyment of the fireplace.

Masonry garden fireplace

A brick patio fireplace is not only a pleasure on cooler summer days or in autumn. You can sit outside, with family, friends or just the two of you, and not have to freeze. Unlike a garden stove, which is usually nothing more than an easily transportable outdoor stove, a garden fireplace is a static fireplace, firmly walled in concrete or stone. With a grill function, patio fireplaces provide culinary hours outdoors. Before building a garden fireplace, it is essential to check with the local authority whether it requires a permit.

An open fireplace has no viewing glass and is therefore open in the living space. This not only gives off warmth, but also the smell of the fire. Fans of open fireplaces argue that this is the most original and best way to enjoy a wood fire. This is why BRUNNER's open fireplaces are simply called URFEUER® fireplaces, as they have been considered man's first, proper source of heat since time immemorial. From a purely legal point of view, an open fireplace is not considered an individual fireplace in Germany. It is therefore not subject to the same specifications and standards as a classic fireplace or tiled stove.

One would think that an open fireplace, due to the absence of a viewing glass, would give off more heat to the living space than its counterpart with a viewing glass. The opposite is the case. The heat output of an open fireplace is only 20 to 30 percent. Or in other words: it heats less well. That is why an open fire is above all an atmospheric fire, and its visual appeal is particularly attractive.

As with all fireplaces or tiled stoves, a good and well thought-out design is required if a system is to meet all safety standards. Special air supply systems make it possible to supply the open fireplace with sufficient fresh air for optimal combustion, even in tight constructions. Together with a sophisticated extraction device, this prevents flue gases from escaping into the living space and guarantees maximum safety. At BRUNNER, these devices have been developed and patented over years. As a further feature, the spark protection from BRUNNER prevents pieces of embers or sparks from flying out of the firebox into the living space. And best of all, its unique design makes it visually invisible when a fire is blazing behind it. Maximum fire experience with minimum risk.

An open fireplace needs sufficient supply air to function properly and safely. For this purpose, supply air ducts must be fitted either to the outer wall or separately to the chimney. In this way, the URFEUER® fireplace can be supplied with sufficient fresh air and operated optimally. Pipes with an average diameter of at least 300 mm are required, and it is not uncommon for structural conditions to make it necessary to attach an electrical extraction device. The environment says thank you. When wood is burnt, only as much CO2 is produced as the tree has previously absorbed. This is why wood heating is called CO2-neutral. Also, no toxic pollutants such as sulphur dioxide are produced in the process.

Technical aspects, safety and practical elements are the be-all and end-all in the design of first-class fireplace and stove inserts. But who wants a sophisticated system that is simply not beautiful? Or that fulfils a technical benefit but is no fun? At BRUNNER, we are always both technicians and designers. There is nothing that works and doesn't also look good. A combustion chamber made of cast-iron plates with grooves, a firebox extension and invisible spark protection grids. A detail must function and please. Our URFEUER® fireplaces are not only practical to use, but also simply really good to look at.
