Reduce electricity costs with heat pump stove heating

The colder the temperatures and the longer the winter, the deeper home-owners have to dig into their pockets when they wish to heat their property with an air source heat pump. This is due to the high electricity costs. Unless the heat pump is combined with a modern wood fire stove.

Heat pumps are popular

Heat pumps are being installed more and more frequently in new buildings, in Germany even in every third residential building. They are particularly popular for detached and semi-detached houses. The main reason is their high efficiency: on average, one kilowatt of electricity is sufficient to generate three to five times the amount of heat energy. Moreover, heat pumps meet the requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance and are easy to install. They are climate-friendly because they use renewable energies, produce no CO2 and they make us independent of the import of fossil fuels such as heating oil or natural gas.

Nothing for frosty days

How does an air heat pump work? By using thermal energy from the air and converting it into heating energy. Heat pumps are most efficient at outdoor temperatures between 2 and 15 degrees Celsius. If it is colder, they quickly reach their limits and their efficiency decreases. Of course, you want a warm house, especially in winter. So that the building does not cool down so quickly, an electric heating element switches on to provide the missing thermal energy for water and heating. The catch: a lot of electricity is needed and electricity is expensive.

Perfect duo lowers electricity costs

To prevent a heat pump from becoming an electricity guzzler when it is cold outside, it is a good idea to combine it with a wood fireplace, i.e. a tiled stove, a heating fireplace or a pellet stove. Optimal are water-bearing appliances with heat exchanger. Why? Because on the one hand the installation room can be heated and on the other hand the remaining energy can be fed into the heating system. There it is available either as heating energy or for hot water preparation. The combination of a heat pump and a wood fire stove makes it possible to heat a building all year round with renewable energy. In addition, a wood fire creates a very special ambience in every home. It can be experienced with all senses: its warmth, the crackling and the smell of the logs, the pleasant light.

Specialist tip

A heat pump is basically a good idea. In the cold winter, however, it should be supported by a tiled stove. This combination is unbeatable!
